Nepal–India Relations Gain Fresh Momentum, Economic Cooperation Set to Expand
Kathmandu, June 9 — Nepal and India have taken another positive step toward strengthening bilateral relations, with recent ministerial-level talks in New Delhi generating optimism for expanded economic cooperation and deeper strategic partnership between the two neighboring countries.
The meeting between Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shishir Khanal, and India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, focused on enhancing collaboration in trade, energy, connectivity, digital innovation, and people-to-people relations. The discussions are being viewed as an important milestone in advancing the long-standing partnership between Nepal and India.
The Nepal–India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICCI) welcomed the outcomes of the talks, expressing confidence that the agreements and commitments reached during the meeting will elevate economic cooperation to new heights and create greater opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries.
According to NICCI, the dialogue covered a wide range of areas, including trade facilitation, border infrastructure development, expansion of rail and road networks, energy cooperation, digital transformation, and startup promotion. These initiatives are expected to strengthen regional connectivity and support sustainable economic growth.
A major highlight of the discussions was the introduction of a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) payment system linking India’s UPI platform with Nepal’s NPI network. The initiative is expected to simplify cross-border transactions, facilitate tourism-related payments, and make remittance transfers more efficient for citizens and businesses on both sides of the border.
The chamber also welcomed cooperation between Digital India Bhashini and Kathmandu University, stating that the partnership could unlock new opportunities in language technology, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation.
NICCI further urged both governments to prioritize modernization of trade infrastructure, simplification of customs procedures, accelerated implementation of energy and infrastructure projects, promotion of bilateral investment, and stronger engagement between the public and private sectors.
Experts believe that faster progress in hydropower development, transmission lines, energy trade, and connectivity projects could significantly contribute to economic prosperity in both Nepal and India while reinforcing regional stability and cooperation.
NICCI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting stronger trade, investment, connectivity, and economic partnership between Nepal and India through continued collaboration and dialogue with stakeholders in both countries.
